Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

The body works as a whole, with structure and function connected.

When something in the system is not working right — called somatic dysfunction — it can lead to pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.

This can happen after an injury, poor posture, stress, certain health conditions, or pregnancy.

Osteopathic doctors (DOs) use their hands with a treatment called Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) to improve movement, restore balance, and help you feel better.

Dr. Kelley Brinsky is an Osteopathic Physician board certified in Neuromuscular Medicine which is specializing in OMM.

FAQs

  • An osteopathic family medicine doctor is a fully licensed physician who provides comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages, with additional training in osteopathic principles and hands-on diagnosis and treatment.

Like all family medicine physicians, an osteopathic doctor (DO) diagnoses and treats acute and chronic medical conditions, manages preventive care, prescribes medications, and coordinates referrals when needed. What distinguishes osteopathic physicians is their emphasis on the relationship between structure and function in the body, as well as their training in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)—a hands-on approach used to support the body’s natural ability to heal.

In practice, an osteopathic family medicine doctor may integrate conventional medical care with osteopathic techniques to address issues such as musculoskeletal pain, headaches, postural strain, and functional limitations, while also managing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and other common medical concerns. This whole-person approach considers how lifestyle, movement, stress, and physical structure contribute to overall health.

Osteopathic family medicine doctors practice in all areas of medicine and are recognized as physicians in every U.S. state.

  • While both DOs and chiropractors are trained to treat musculoskeletal issues, their approaches, training, and scope of practice are different:

    • Education and Training: DOs complete medical school, residency, and can specialize in any field of medicine

    • Osteopaths are fully licensed physicians who can prescribe medication, perform surgery, and treat a wide range of conditions

    • DOs integrate conventional medicine with hands-on Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

  • Osteopathic Manipulation: Mission Osteopathy does not bill insurance, but we will provide a Superbill that you can submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement for OMM.

Coverage for osteopathic manipulation varies by insurance plan, so we recommend checking with your insurance carrier for details.

Direct Primary Care: Primary Care services are a simple monthly membership. We do not bill or accept insurance for visits.
